Top Sports coaching at leading University

An opportunity to receive specialist coaching at a top University was on offer for a number of gifted and talented students at the Wey Valley School.

Year 8 students spent the day at Bath University receiving netball and football coaching followed by individual and team coaching at the indoor training arena. This is the tenth year the school has taken students to Bath with over 800 students to date visiting the University.

Stuart Heath, PE Teacher from Wey Valley said ‘the students had a superb day of quality coaching and gained a valuable insight into some fantastic sporting facilities and a taste of university life. The focus for this visit was specialist coaching with their chosen sport in the morning to complement their gifted and talented sessions in school.  In some of the best facilities the country can offer, our students then focused on fitness at the University’s inside athletics track with tests on speed, agility, balance and concentration; key attributes to a good sportsman/women and a keen learner in the classroom.’

The school has already seen Year 9 and 10 students visit the University with further visits scheduled for Years 7 and 11 later this year.

Jess Clements, Sports Development Officer at Bath University said ‘The students really enjoyed the day at the University Campus with a tour of the main sports hub and a series of coaching sessions.  The coaching sessions really inspired all the students in their field of sport with the aim to go further at school, club and regional level.  The Wey Valley students showed great commitment to learn new techniques and apply them individually and as a team. We look forward to welcoming future Wey Valley students to the University.’

Mr Heath added ‘we continue to see a number of our students turning into exceptional athletes, with representation at national and international events.  A number of our students are also recognised through our Sports Scholarship Programme.   A number of Wey Valley students have gone onto Bath University to pursue their studies and we have met a number of former Wey Valley students as part of a University trip earlier this year.’
