Tennis opportunities for all!

Whilst Weymouth and Portland sees its fair share of wet weather at the moment, more and more opportunities for indoor sport are becoming available at the Wey Valley School.
Teenagers can now play tennis for free on Fridays at the Wey Valley Tennis Centre in Weymouth following support from Active Dorset and local tennis coach Matt Eaton.


Ryan Matthews, Tennis Liaison Officer at Wey Valley said, ‘The sessions take place under the roof so no matter the weather, free tennis will be available to teenagers aged 13 to 18 on Fridays between 5.30pm and 6.30pm.’

The Centre has also set up an Adult Tennis League to enable players to play competitive matches on a round-robin basis. Ryan added, ‘Take up for the Adult Tennis has been good but there is still room for more players!'

Ryan also added, ‘With numerous opportunities for expertise tennis coaching from Julien Lawes, Head Coach of Weymouth Tennis Club and his coaching team as well as pay and play tennis at the centre, it is a busy time here at Wey Valley with high demand for court time. We have kept court prices low at £10 per hour (and £8 off peak) to support the Lawn Tennis Association’s drive to increase participation in the sport’.

James Deem, the LTA’s Regional Tennis Participation Manager added, ‘we are pleased to see the hive of tennis activity at the Wey Valley Tennis Centre with more and more tennis opportunities for all ages and abilities.’

The Tennis Centre also hosts the ever popular sport of table tennis on Wednesdays, ran by Andy Millar from the Weymouth & District Table Tennis League, part of a wider programme to bring table tennis at all local Secondary schools in Weymouth, Portland, Bridport and Dorchester. Andy said, ‘we are seeing more youngsters playing this great sport and there is an open invitation for free table tennis on Wednesday s between 5pm and 6.30pm due to the number of table tennis tables available at the centre.’
