Students prepare for the world of work

Year 11 students at the Wey Valley School spent the day receiving mock interviews with business leaders as preparation towards their further education or career aspirations.

Over 150 students met a variety of business leaders, ranging from local industry to public sector at the school’s Conference rooms.

Mrs Mary Critchell, 14 to 19 co-ordinator at the school said ‘ this is the third year the school has carried out these mock interviews and they have served our students well as many 15 year olds will not have experienced an interview environment. Interview techniques are one of the basic employability skills that we all need and at The Wey Valley School we are doing all we can to prepare our students for the future. The feedback from students and the many volunteers from business has been really positive.”

Jamie McIntyre, Year 11 student said “this was my first interview and I found it very useful with questions on predicted grades, future careers and where I am with my current studies”

Sophie Challoner also added “I have had two interviews before but this morning’s interview was very good with lots of questions about how my current studies will shape my future aspirations”.

Harry Taylor-Griffiths commented “my interview went really well and has given me confidence in knowing what to expect with future interviews”.

Lloyd Savage from the Economic Regeneration Team at Weymouth & Portland Borough Council added ‘the interviews this morning have been really positive. I am very pleased how well the students are prepared for their futures. Some students were a little nervous at the start but became very confident as the interview progressed”.

Councillor, Pam Nixon said “ it has been a very interesting day meeting so many great students with so much potential. It was refreshing to listen to many students with strong and determined opinions and who are so well prepared for their futures”

Sarah Colwell from Activate Performing Arts remarked ‘excellent interviews today, the students have surpassed my expectations with their preparation which bodes well for their future ambitions and careers”.

Phil Thomas, Principal commented “the school is very grateful for the continued support from so many business leaders who have interviewed and supported our students.  This has been an inspiring day for our students and will no doubt prepare them well for their next step in their studies or career journey”.
