SILVER MARK AWARD

SILVER MARK AWARD

The Wey Valley School has become the first school in Dorset to be awarded the Silver Mark Award.

The Wey Valley School has been working with Sustrans for the past 4 years to increase the number of students travelling actively to school. The school now runs regular 'bike breakfast' events each half term and an active school cycle club including track, BMX, mountain bike and road cycling.

Over the years the cycle storage at school has increased to over 140 spaces and there is scooter storage on site as well following an increase in their popularity. The school is involved in transition work with local year 6 pupils to help them understand how they can cycle to their new school in year 7, and regularly take part in competitions to reward and encourage cycling and scooting. According to various different surveys on student travel patterns, the number cycling to school has at least doubled in the last few years. From 3.9% in 2010-11, to 7.1% in 2011-12 and last year in the summer regularly saw over 100 bikes in the shelters which is around 10%.
