Olympic Sailor visits Wey Valley

As part of Comic Relief’s promotion of Sport Relief, UK Masters Champion and future Olympian sailor Flora Stewart visited the Wey Valley School in Weymouth to meet students and share her experiences and ambitions for the sport she loves. The visit also served to raise awareness and the good causes of Sport Relief, which takes place on Friday 18th March.

Flora studied Sports Performance at the University of Bath and now spends most weekends travelling to the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy, the site for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Flora started sailing Toppers when she was 11 at the Solway Yacht Club, Kippford in the South West of Scotland, achieving great success in the Topper Class before moving into a double -handed – 420. Flora and her sailing partner Anna Burnet from Helensburgh were UK Ladies National Champions. Flora was previously a member of the Scottish and Great Britain 420 sailing squad and represented Great Britain at the both the European and World Championships. Flora is currently UK Masters Champion and now represents Great Britain in the 470 Olympic Class and will compete again on the international stage this year.

Flora spent the afternoon at Wey Valley meeting students involved with the Will Mackaness Trust; a charitable trust that supports and encourages young people to be involved in water sports. There were question and answer sessions along with a Sport Relief assembly and a meeting with the school’s Student Council and Sports Council.
On being asked about Sport relief and either running, cycling or swimming the mile, Flora said, “as I can’t sail the mile, I would look to run, swim and cycle as they are all great sports that I enjoy.”

Flora shared with students her experiences to date in sailing and future ambitions, adding, “last year was a good year finishing in the top 15 in the World and European Sailing Championships.” Flora, who has just recovered from injury, added “my weekly routine is a demanding one, normally seven fitness sessions and four sailing sessions and we are preparing ourselves for travel to Majorca next month for further training and sailing. We are aiming high for ‘Gold’ in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.”

Mr Andrew Wilson, Vice Principal at Wey Valley said, “I would like to thank Flora for her visit today. The students have been inspired with Flora’s journey and ambitions for Tokyo and we all wish her success in the future. Flora’s visit and meetings with our Student Council has created a lot of discussion amongst our students about the school’s approach for raising funds for Sport Relief and plans are now underway for a successful day in March for this worthwhile cause.”
