Maths

Mathematics is the means of looking at the patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in which they are constructed and realised. Our aim is to provide a Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 Curriculum that enables students the means to make that knowledge useful. Throughout a student’s time at The Wey Valley School we hope to instil not only an understanding but an appreciation and enjoyment for mathematics.

We adopt a co-operative learning ethos within the department and strive to enrich our students through a range of extra-curricular activities and clubs.

At Wey Valley we now follow a 3 year GCSE course, meaning that students begin their further studying from Year 9.

Key Stage 3

We have developed a new Key Stage3 curriculum which hopes to provide students with the necessary skills to achieve their potential during their GCSE years. In order to offer our students the best opportunities, we have tuned our Key Stage 3 curriculum to match the current Ofsted criteria of what effective teaching in mathematics should resemble.

Through problem solving activities we aim to develop an investigative approach to learning and believe we have created a model of learning that allows all students to develop important logical and mathematical thinking skills.

Key Stage 4

We follow the Edexcel Linear Syllabus and students are entered in two different tiers, depending on their ability:

Foundation Tier                Grades 1-5

Higher Tier                         Grades 4-9

Assessment at the end of the course means that learners have time to develop a mature understanding of the subject before being examined.

The GCSE Exam is entirely exam based and consists of three papers:

Paper 1:  Written Paper (Non Calculator) 33.3%

Foundation Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins

Higher Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins

Paper 2:  Written Paper (Calculator) 33.3%

Foundation Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins

Higher Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins

Paper 3: Written Paper (Calculator) 33.3%

Foundation Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins

Higher Tier – 1 hour and 30 mins
