Gifted & Talented students visit Bath University

An opportunity to receive specialist coaching at a top University was on offer for a number of gifted and talented students at the Wey Valley School.

Year 10 students spent the day at Bath University receiving football and netball coaching followed by individual and team coaching at the indoor training arena. This is the seventh year the school has taken students to Bath with over 350 students to date visiting the University with further trips scheduled later this term and into the New Year.

Stuart Heath, PE Teacher from Wey Valley said ‘students gain a valuable insight into some fantastic sporting facilities and a taste of university life.  Our students received coaching in many sports including football, netball, badminton, athletics, swimming and tennis in some of the best facilities the country can offer. The afternoon sessions focused on student fitness at the University’s inside athletics track with tests on speed, agility, balance and concentration; key attributes to a good sportsman/women and a keen learner in the classroom.’

Jess Clements, Sports Development Officer at Bath University said ‘the students really enjoyed the day spent at Bath University with a series of excellent sports sessions that inspire students in their field of sport with the aim to go further at school, club and regional level. The students at Wey Valley have shown great commitment to learn new techniques and apply them individually and as a team. We look forward to welcoming future Wey Valley students to the University.’

Mr Heath added ‘we continue to see a number of our students turning into exceptional athletes and this is complementing their academic skills in the classroom. A number of Wey Valley students have gone onto Bath University to pursue their studies and we met former Wey Valley students as part a trip earlier this year . These visits to Bath only inspire our students to reach the very top’.

Emily Conning in Year 10 said: ‘it was a great day with some excellent coaching; the day was non-stop!  The physio session after lunch was really informative on how to look after yourself to ensure you remain fit for sport’

Isobel Samways, also in Year 10 added’ the netball sessions was great as we all learned new skills and I really enjoyed the physio session which will help me with my Dance studies.  The coaches were very good and I would recommend the trip to other students’
