5 Star Wey Valley win Area Cup

The Wey Valley School basketball team has won the Area Cup for the fifth consecutive year following wins against Budmouth, All Saints, Thomas Hardye and Colfox schools.
Congratulating his team on their achievement, Mark Salmon, Wey Valley’s head of PE, said:  “Winning the area cup five times in a row is a spectacular achievement and our players have been fantastic, showing great teamwork and attitude in their matches.

Sixteen-year-old Max Gilmartin said: “We won all our matches and played some really great basketball against some good teams.”

Max, who has been accepted for a place on the basketball scholarship programme at Itchen College in Southampton starting in September 2015, has benefited from The Wey Valley School Sports Scholarship Scheme which is available to all students participating at county level or higher.

Two of his fellow players, Jerry Thompson and Luke Strong, are also keeping their fingers crossed for basketball scholarship places at Itchen College.
Max Gilmartin said the whole team is very appreciative of the support and extra after-school coaching provided by the PE teachers at Wey Valley.
Several members of The Wey Valley School’s basketball team also play for clubs outside of school, including the Weymouth adult team in Division 1, Weymouth Tropics U16 and Weymouth Oilers U14.
Mark Salmon said: “The students involved are great role models for our younger students, because their dedicated approach is also reflected in their work in classroom. I’m optimistic that it will bring continued success, as well as enjoyment of the sport.”
